Drumming with Symphony - Play The Ink Or Not?
I've been playing a lot of shows with the Nashville Symphony and others around the country this year, and I wanted to show an example of a part I was asked to play on one of the shows. The part was pretty demanding and I had to devise a special sticking to make it work on the drum kit.

    I'm only running 2 Ambient condenser mics and my sample pad into my ears. ! is placed between the hihat, snare and rack tome. The other one is placed near the floor toms. This gives me a decent balance, so i can still hear tone, kick snare and some cymbals. The drums are the loudest things on the stage so you should be able to feel them.

      That's an interesting mic configuration! I've done something similar in the past but I would always want to have a dedicated KICK mic.

    awesome upload -- thanks for sharing. Last year I totally copied your electronics interface (mixer, Tama Rhythm Watch, double DI, etc) I use it for practice, rehearsal, and gigs - pretty much always. Question: when you speak into the mic, just the musicians hear that, or does that go out to the house as well ? (I think I just got my answer at 18:37 -- Stars is in 3?)

    • @brianczach

      Thanks man! That's known as a "talk back" mic and only the band and crew can hear it. Glad you're making good use of the click box idea. It's really a helpful tool. And yes, Stars is in 3/4. Love me a good country waltz. Nobody seems to write those anymore.

    You do need overhead in your mix but Be careful with the overhead volume being too loud. If you’re playing to loops/tracks or stems the sound of the cymbals could make you lose the loop/track

    • @brianczach
      @brianczach 3 місяці тому

      That’s true. You’ll need to make sure you dial in a good mix with the sound engineer or if you’re running your own mix, just give yourself enough signal so that you can hear the top end of the kit (cymbals and high frequency). Thanks for watching!

  • @viktorferenczi7030

    You mentioned in the beggining of the video that it holds its tune very well, then at a lower tuning it is going down in pitch... Is it only because of the low tension? Seems strange because 8 lugs must be tighter relative to the same pitch of a 10 lug drum.

    • @brianczach
      @brianczach 4 місяці тому

      Yeah I think it was dropping in pitch because it was still settling into that lower tuning and each time I hit it, it was dropping slightly. Kinda funny actually. But after a few hits, it settled into the new lower tuning. I think it was just because the head had been tuned up higher for so long and it just needed a few seconds to settle into the lower tuning. Thanks for watching!

    The congregation may be small but your pearls of wisdom are not falling on deaf ears. I pretty much live on the other side of the world so can’t do real time. Sorry. Many inexperienced drummers (and audiences too maybe) think that a busy drummer is a good drummer. There is nothing worse than a drummer who overplays everything just because they can. Went to a show to see a friend playing with his family band. The teenage son was on drums. They were playing all Stones and Beatles. The drummer was filling wildly all over the place. It was unbearable (for me anyhow). He obviously doesn’t listen. Charlie Watts and Ringo are 2 of the greatest drummers of all time. What they play is exactly all that the songs need.

    Hi Brian, would you recommend it as a primary workhorse kind of snare? Great playing btw sir

    • @brianczach
      @brianczach 5 місяців тому

      I can't say I would recommend this drum as a primary workhorse snare. My primary workhorse snare is definitely some kind of aluminum shell drum, like a Supraphonic or equivalent. The Tama SLP Dry Aluminum is right up there for me, and I use that drum on most of my local, in town gigs. It sounds good tuned up, down, in the middle, and it's lightweight too. After spending more time with it, this walnut SLP drum would be a good secondary drum to a brass or aluminum drum. The walnut definitely has darker tonality, which works in some very "live" acoustic rooms. The only drawback is the "stick saver" rims actually chew up sticks pretty quickly, ironically. Stay tuned to this channel as I'm in the planning stages of creating a series of videos that spotlights all the different snare drums I've come to own over the years. Over 20!!

      This is an old video from a few years ago. This was my first high-end drum kit which I bought as a student back in 1996 and I still use it today. The Canopus kit you saw actually is owned by Mannheim Steamroller. I endorse Canopus snares and snare wires but I don't have a full endorsement with them (although that could be in the works!) or with Tama. I also have a good relationship with one of the Tama artist reps so they've hooked me up a few times for different things over the years. Thanks for tuning in!
